Comprehensive social policies for development in a
globalizing world
The core material on this website is based on a roundtable event
held in November 2006 in Kellokoski, Finland, with
a joint event in
Stockholm, Sweden. The roundtable gathered together social and
employment policy experts from several governments, civil society
organisations and research organisations of the Global South and
North, as well as from international organisations. The resulting
publication "Comprehensive Social Policies for Development in a
Globalizing World" and the joint policy statement from the
Kellokoski event, "New Consensus on Comprehensive Social Policies
for Development", can be downloaded via a link in the right
menu.
Background
Comprehensive social policy is receiving increasing attention on
the development agenda. A growing number of governments,
institutions and researchers in both the Global South and North are
convinced that we need comprehensive social policies in order to
achieve the Millennium Development Goals and broader development
objectives. In other words, broad social policy is needed for
establishing and securing structures for redressing poverty,
inequality and conflict.
As an internationally emerging theme, comprehensive social
policy is the subject of numerous policy discussions, field
programs and ongoing research. Important reports, research papers
and declarations are frequently coming out from a wide range of
sources on national, regional and international levels. Sorting out
the relevant pieces of information and understanding their meaning
in context can be a consuming task for anyone. The purpose of this
website is to make this task a bit easier.
