The Finnish Foundation of Alcohol Studies

The Finnish Foundation for Alcohol Studies

The Finnish Foundation for Alcohol Studies was established in 1950. It is funded mainly by the State of Finland and the Alko retail alcohol monopoly.

The purpose of the Foundation is to promote and support scientific research on alcohol use in general and on alcohol drinking as an individual and social problem. In addition, temperance studies as well as research on narcotics and other addictive drugs in relation to alcohol use also fall within the scope of the Foundation's purpose.

The Foundation is multidisciplinary. It supports social, behavioural, biological and medical research by funding scientific research and travel, publishing scholarly books, and by organising seminars.

International co-operation

Internationally, the Foundation co-operates with the Nordic Council for Alcohol and Drug Research, World Health Organisation, Addiction Research Institute of the Erasmus University (Rotterdam), Department of Medical Sociology, University of Maastricht (Limburg), Alcohol Research Group of the Institute of Epidemiology and Behavioral Medicine (Berkeley) and Prevention Research Center (Berkeley). Joint projects have earlier also been carried out Statens institutt for alkohol- og narkotikaforskning (Oslo), U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (Washington), National Addiction Centre (London), Schweizerische Fachstelle für Alkohol- und andere Drogenprobleme (Lausanne), Ludwig Boltzmann Institut für Suchtforschung (Wien), Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology (Warchaw) and Instituto Mexicano de Psiquiatria (Mexico City).
